Replace A Fan On A Dell Laptop
Published by admin, on Dec 30 2010, in the categories: Dell
In this article, we are going to show you the easy steps of replacing a fan on a dell laptop computer. The process is pretty simple so you can do this at home with no tech help. Beware that the process may be different depending on the Dell laptop model that you have. Since we can’t explain the process for every model, we have chosen the Dell Latitude D600.
Replacing a fan on a Dell laptop computer is not as complicated as it sounds. When your laptop starts shutting down for no apparent reason, this could be an overheating problem so always check the temperature on the bottom of the laptop. Ok, the first thing you should always do when messing with electronics is to check that there is no power running through the unit. Make sure you take out the battery and disconnect the power cable from the unit. After taking care of that aspect, flip the laptop upside down and remove the 9 screws.
On the front side, use a small screwdriver to remove the switch cover. Next, 2 screws will be revealed and they need to be removed as they are securing the keyboard. After taking care of those screws, you must carefully remove the keyboard because there is still one cable that is holding it to the motherboard and it needs to be disconnected.
Then you will notice that there are three screws which are securing the display hinges and another one securing the video cable ground. Now you can disconnect the video cable connector which is attached to the motherboard. If you want, you can also replace the display assembly. The top cover is secure by 3 screws and after you have removed them, the next step is to disconnect the touchpad cable secured to the motherboard. Now you can separate the top cover from the unit using a small screwdriver to lift it up and then you can simply use your fingers.
You now have access to the cooling module. If you want to remove dust clogs from inside, you can use a can of compressed air which helps blow all the dust particles outside leaving the inside all clean. If you want to remove the whole cooling assembly, you must do the following. There are 4 screws which hold the heat sink in place and they have to be removed.
Next you can lift up the heat sink and remove it. Now you have 2 screws securing the cooling fan. Remove them as well and then you can disconnect the fan cable connected to the motherboard. Now the fan comes off and you can replace it with a new one. To put the unit back together, simply reverse the process described above. Make sure you store all the screws into a safe place and eventually in separate boxes so you know exactly where each screw goes when you have to put the laptop back together. The process is simple, all you need are properly sized and shaped screwdrivers and a little bit of patience.

Dell XPS Laptops

When it comes to Dell XPS laptops, the XPS 16 makes a great combination between price and an optimal configuration. The laptop runs on a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 processor and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM. The hard disk capacity is 320 GB and the graphics card is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670 with 512 MB of video memory.
The starting price is a bit less than $1,200 but the unit configured here costs about $1,800 so be careful what extra options you choose when you order and customize your own unit from the Dell official website as you may end up paying more than you expected.
There is not much to talk about the looks but the display is definitely an interesting chapter. The 16 inch screen offers and impeccable image with rich and sharp colors and a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The keyboard is excellent and like most Dell keyboards, it offers great feedback and excellent key travel. The speakers are located on the left and right side of the keyboard and since the keys are not stretches all the way to the edge of the notebook, it may look like the keyboard is actually smaller than it already is. The touchpad is small compared to the size of the notebook but the surface is responsive and the left and right mouse buttons produce excellent clicks when you press them.
As for the selection of ports and connections, Dell has always surprised us with a fair combination to make users pleasant. The unit has 4 USB ports, an Express Card slot, a FireWire port, a VGA out, an Ethernet port, a HDMI port, a card reader, a TV tuner antenna jack, e Kensington lock slot and the headphones plus microphone jacks. The HDMI port is excellent if you choose the optional Blu-ray optical drive because you can now watch HD movies on an external monitor.
The speakers are great so external speakers are only necessary for really picky people. As for the battery life, the 9 cell battery will keep the laptop up and running for 2 hours and 50 minutes with screen brightness set to 80% and surfing the internet with the wireless card enabled. And the power management profile of the Windows Vista operating system was set to “balanced mode”. The 6 cell battery obviously does not offer the same performance but it makes the laptop a little lighter so if you are interested in portability, you may want to choose the 6 cell battery.
This notebook has the right specs to one of the amazing Dell XPS laptops. With a solid built in quality and a super keyboard, the laptop has just what it takes to your laptop for the next years to come. The performance is great considering the price you pay and even if it’s not the best gaming laptop, it still allows you to play a couple of games. It has a great port selection and a Blu-ray optical drive which allows you to watch HD movies on your 16 inch display.
