Medion Akoya Mini E1210

The Medion Akoya Mini E1210 is a 10-inch netbook. Its dimensions place it in the limit of the ultraportable (which is even marked on the box) and Netbook. Two clues point nonetheless to the second possibility: the Intel Atom processor and the lack of DVD player. The model tested, white is part of a joint introductory offer with Orange. The operator will thus be placed in front of partnership SFR / Asus with a solution netbook + 3G.
Handling, ergonomics. Having a 10 inch screen is felt throughout much of the machine. It is heavier than 200 grams than its competitors in 8 inches. Nevertheless, it provides a keyboard worthy of the name much more comfortable to use. Its keys are large and few of them are resized (the arrows in the lower right, for example). One embarrassing failure, the position of the function key at the bottom left instead of the “Ctrl”. I much prefer the opposite (press “ctrl” on the left), as is the case with most conventional keyboards.
The touchpad is surprising, for the small size of the netbook. It is similar to that of eCAFE (8 inches) and significantly smaller than the Asus 901 (main gain in width). Below, there is a single bar for left and right clicks. If it is not separated in the middle, click one side or the other operates much the two types of clicks. The interfaces available around the hull are classics: 3 USB, 1 VGA, 1 RJ45 (network) and 2 mini-jack (microphone and headphones). On the right, a multiformat memory card reader (SD, MMC, MS) has found its place. Its speed of transfer is very good (almost 19 MB / s for large files) and similar to conventional laptops.
The webcam image is very noisy, and the sound captured by the microphone … full of cracks. Furthermore, we hear background noise whose origin could be someone who speaks from a jar (full of water of course). This device is really not up to the rest of the machine. To hear the sound from the loudspeaker located under the computer, do not hesitate to listen. The volume, even pushed to the maximum, remains low. To be used as a last resort. The helmet is the best option. Calculations. The first question to ask about this part is: this Medion Akoya Mini E1210 is it faster to launch videos, open a mail client server, software text entry. The answer is yes. The second question is: how is up there compared to other models? The processor is the same on many models. The difference will therefore be mainly in the hard disk.
Our tester photo has installed Lightroom 2 on this machine. The installation went quickly and the opening of the software and the first photo retouching. Problems arise indirectly with the size of windows. The height of 600 pixels limits the visibility of options and buttons validation. They found out fields at the bottom of the image (at least to reduce the Windows taskbar). You can blame Adobe for not here offer a lift or resizing windows, or the definition of the screen. Still, in the state, it’s embarrassing. Besides this, retouching image are realized an average speed (do not ask too complicated operations, if the netbook throws in the towel due to lack of memory) and transfer photos are rapidly since Memory Card Reader.

All dressed in white, the surface of the cover is glossy, while the inside is matte (preferable to avoid fingerprints).
The finish is average, with places that deserve more attention. The plastic protector located at the junction of the screen is badly adjusted, and overall assemblies plastics are poor. These are details that show that we are dealing with a machine at low prices. Competition has nevertheless made considerable efforts in recent months to fight against this impression, with success. The E1311 is unfortunately not at this level of quality.
The keyboard takes up the entire width of the netbooks, which can offer large buttons, similar to those of a conventional keyboard. Some were slightly smaller, which poses no real problem here. The strike is firm and responsive buttons. The touchpad is good size and is pleasant to use. It remains far from the best touchpads of time (large multi-touch).

Noted however that the model we received is a pre-series, with a QWERTY keyboard. The FN key is also the bad idea of being in the bottom left, instead of the CTRL, which is anything but convenient. Hope that such defects will be corrected on the retail version.
The webcam is not very good. It tends to burn very exposed areas, and the colors are pretty cool. The microphone is well placed, being located above the screen to the left of the webcam. This prevents unwanted noise caused by keyboarding, when the webcam is located near the keys.
The noise of the machine is bearable. However, the fan runs continuously and we have seen more discreet. The hard drive makes a slight scratching on access and copying, and still be heard. There are far worse, but we can not qualify the E1311 muffler.
Access to components is impossible without disassembling the entire netbook. We find no door under the machine and only the battery is removable. As a pre-series version, you can change this by marketing.

The specificity of the E1311 is its processor. The AMD Sempron 210U he wants to use more powerful effect than a “mere” Intel Atom. In practice, we obtain an index of 26. It is actually more effective than Atom N280 (index 20), which earned him five stars on this game, but still 2-3 times worse than Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 (score 50-55) . Interest remains very limited, since this processor consumes more energy, which plays a lot of autonomy.
The other black spot is his inability to play HD streams smoothly. Part ATI X1250 does not support hardware decoding of these videos, and the single-core processor is not
Fences netbooks are often very poor, and that Medion is no exception to the rule. The maximum volume is not very high, but enough for a netbook. The headphone output is correct, no more, but has the merit of being clean enough.
Our test model had a 3 cell battery. Autonomy does while playing a video 2:22 (brightness at 100 cd / m², Wi-Fi turned off and headphones plugged in). That is low, but better than what we obtained with the Mini E1210 the same range (1:48).
Medion, however, goes to market this model in France with a 6 cell battery more durable. Autonomy should logically be flirting with the four hours, which would already be more reasonable for this type of product.
The magazine of the Akoya Mini E1311 is relatively compact. It should not burden yourself too during your travels, although sometimes found with some smaller models.
