At this comparison, the best 17 inch laptop from these 2 models is definitely the Acer Aspire 7740. Most of the features of the two models are the same, but there are still some big and important differences. The first major one is at the processor, and the processor from the Acer laptop is a newer and better one. The second difference would be at the hard drive, and the Acer laptop has a disc capacity of 500 GB, while the Toshiba model has just 400 GB. And besides this the model from Acer is 200 dollars cheaper so it can be considered better than the Toshiba Satellite Pro L 550.
